The local agriculture sector faces many challenges: limited access to information, poor implementation policies and disjointed land administration agencies. Even so, many stakeholders of all kinds face these problems head on, creating solutions that benefit their environment. Problem solving in the agriculture sector should be encouraged! The practice of using one’s limited resources to move forward with projects and enterprises should definitely be propagated, and social media can play a crucial role in this.
Five enterprises have come together to contribute towards moving the agriculture sector forward. They are the Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD) from Trinidad and Tobago, Tech4agri, W.H.Y Farm, Lukesmith T.V and Ebites. Together with social media expert Peter Casier, we designed a workshop for young professionals, specifically for those who are working in the agriculture sector, to develop their online presence.
The workshop theme is Building your Social Currency – “Collaboration not competition towards a food secure community”. It’s time to bridge the gap between the local agripreneur and the consumer through the use of social media. Trust us, you’ve never seen a Social Media Workshop like this in Trinidad and Tobago.
Join us on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of July 2016 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in Room 27 of the Faculty of Food and Agriculture, located at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.
Social Media with a Determination
As you may have already observed from reports issued in main stream media in recent times, social media is the fastest growing medium to share and receive information globally. Hence, it’s a shock to us how under-utilized it is by many local organizations and individuals. Therefore, this workshop has identified the following three objectives as our focus;
- To raise awareness among local about the benefits of using social media for growing their agribusiness.
- To train young professionals in the use social media tools and methods to assist agricultural development.
- To assist in the development of skills, for food innovators and agripreneurs that rely on social media for their business’ online presence.
The Training Programme
We will combine theory with practice: One day of classroom training will be followed by practical exercises on the second day:
Jul 29 (classroom training):
09:00-12:00 – The Social Media Plethora: Overview of all tools, and their use for nonprofit causes
13:00-16:00 – The Social Media Plethora (continued)
16:00-17:00 – Introduction to social media outreach strategies
July 30 (practical exercises):
09:00-12:00 – The art of blogging: How to write good blog posts. What makes a good blog?
13:00-16:00 – The art of tweeting: How to use Twitter
The “theoretical” part illustrates a full spectrum of all social media tools at our disposal. It is speckled with many examples of how professionals, specifically in an agriculture or research environment, use each tool, and how organizations or agribusinesses can develop their social media strategy. In the Twitter and blogging segment, we delve into hands-on details and exercises.
Who can participate in our training?
The Workshop is open to all students, any researcher, practitioner or nonprofit organisation working in the field of agriculture, food security, sustainable development and ecosystems. Spaces are limited; as a result registration is prioritized on a first come first serve basis.
Registration is TT $100.00. This fee is payable upon arrival, on the first day of the event, Friday 29th July, 2016.

Meet our Social Media Trainer:
Peter Casier originally studied graphical engineering and psychology. He has 30 years of professional experience as a trainer, software developer, IT and communications manager, scientific researcher and senior project manager. For 15 years, he managed the UN’s technical intervention team, supporting efforts on humanitarian crises across the globe.
Since 2010, Peter has been engaged as an online media consultant for many international nonprofit organisations. He focuses on website development, online event management, media training and workshops, content generation, and online media strategy/policy development. He has been the social media project manager for many large international conferences. Peter also works as the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) Social Media Coordinator.
